Churrasco (choo-ras-koo) is a Brazilian word for Barbeque.

It describes a culinary tradition that originated in Rio Grande do Sui, the south end of Brazil. In the olden days, "Gauchos" (Southern Brazilian Cowboys), natives of the Pampas of Rio Grande do Sul, pierced large pieces of meat on skewers and slowly roasted them over pits of open flames.

Gauchos would prepare a feast for their families while talking about their adventures on the plains. This robust and straightforward churrasco tradition lasts to this day.Nowadays, the churrasco has been moved from the plains to restaurants. Yet, churrasco has inspired the robust dancing and singing traditions to carry on worldwide today. And the Brazilian churrasco also makes a hit worldwide with the popularity of Brazilian culture featured with samba and football.
